Gateway Pet Guardians: Shelter Of The Month

Shelter and Adoptable Pets of the Month

Starting this month, Petropolis will be sponsoring one adoptable cat and dog from Gateway Pet Guardians, a nonprofit pet rescue program and shelter located in East St. Louis. To celebrate this new partnership, we decided to name Gateway Pet Guardians our Petropolis Shelter of the Month!

Although Gateway Pet Guardians opened in 2004, the concept came to life years before. In 1995, founder P.J. Hightower started feeding the stray dogs in East St. Louis with money from her own pockets. She did this almost every day for nine years. In 2001, four other women joined her, and the five pet-lovers formed an organization to raise money for these strays. Three years later, they officially founded Gateway Pet Guardians.

Now, the organization is far larger than its humble origin. Gateway Pet Guardians is currently preparing for the grand opening of their new location in East St. Louis. Upon opening, they will be the city’s first and only animal shelter. They have pets in foster programs, their TNR Program (Trap Neuter Release) for feral cats, and several community outreach programs that help owners with affordable spays and neuters, emergency vet expenses, microchipping, and vaccinations. Plus, they are still feeding the stray population - and going through 1,000 pounds of dog food a month to do so.

We are so excited to have partnered with Gateway Pet Guardians and even more excited to help find homes for their adoptable pets. This month, we’re sponsoring Braxton and DeNovo.

Meet Braxton, Our Adoptable Dog of the Month

Our very first Adoptable Dog of the Month is Braxton, a two-year-old pit bull terrier mix with a huge heart and plenty of patience. If you’re looking for the perfect family pet, consider bringing Braxton home. He loves playing with kids and getting belly rubs.  He’s housebroken and crate trained, and he already knows several commands. Braxton is a medium-energy pup, so he’ll be just as happy romping around the yard with the kids as he will be cuddled up on the couch watching T.V.

Braxton has been in his foster home for a while now, but he’s ready to find his people. Animal Control found him as a stray, and Gateway Pet Guardians pulled him from their system in hopes of finding him a home. Luckily, he hasn’t let his time as a stray slow him down and is a super friendly pup. He’d do well in a home with children and possibly other dogs.

Meet DeNovo, Our Adoptable Cat of the Month

This little orange bundle of fun is DeNovo, our first Adoptable Cat of the Month! Gateway Pet Guardians rescued him at just one week old with his feral mother and littermates. After raising her litter in a foster home, DeNovo’s mom was spayed and released as part of Gateway Pet Rescue’s TNR (Trap Neuter Release) Program. Now, DeNovo is old enough to be adopted and looking for his people!

Little DeNovo is great with children, dogs, and other cats. He’s young and has plenty of energy, so he’d do well in a home with kids to play with and lots of toys. He needs a loving home with room to grow and plenty of cuddles.

If you’re ready to invite DeNovo into your family, fill out an application with Gateway Pet Guardians. Click here to learn more.
